The Erks opened their EMBL season on Tuesday night with a deserved win
against last season' s champions Hainault. Starting with guards Lee
Atkinson and Dave Passacantilli, forwards Declan McCusker and Martin
Overare and Ed Bailey filling the centre spot, the Erks quickly found
their rhythm and ended the first quarter six points up. Significantly
all of the starting five had points in the first quarter which bodes
well for the rest of the season.
Despite the early promise the Erks were unable to take full control of
the game and struggled to get their running game going and this meant
that the seven man Hainault team were able to keep the game close
through out the four quarters. Former Erk, Keith Pringle, was the most
dangerous Hainault player and scored 11 out of 29 first half points
including three treys.
By the end of the third quarter the Erks lead was down to 2 however the
victory was sealed in the fourth as Hainault's Graham Hill fouled out
and the Erks hit 10 from 12 foul shots.
Coach McCusker singled out new guard Dave Passacantilli for particular
praise. Dave hit 15 points and looked confident running the floor. Mike
Overare also acquitted himself well. Off the bench Nelson also showed
some good offensive moves that earned him 12 points.
The next game is away to the Lakers on Friday 18th October.
