Forest - 66 Erks 1 - 68
|
Two young heavily stacked teams (Erks fielding 10, Forest fielding a few more) went head to head last night. Erks were missing Coach Julian Morvan and newly appointed swing man Sean Hutchinson from the line up but felt confident that they could carry on and get the win.
Erks came out of the blocks and quickly with Wes and Mike forcing turnovers in the post Irfan and Robin French running the point and hit a quick 8 point lead as Jon Amoasi found his way to the basket with apparent ease.
Forest managed to stay in the game and force their way back with some good ball movement and lazy defense on the Erks front. The first quarter came to an end with the away team up by 1. Coach Agbolegbe was not happy with the performance but content in knowing that they had the lead.
The 2nd quarter Dela fielded the mixed and matched the young guns in an attempt to get some involvement from the whole team. This led to a scrappy second quarter where turnovers dictated the scoring for as the sides traded blows.
Both teams used the fact that the game had only one referee to their advantage as only 5 fouls were called in the first half (and only 11 fouls during the whole game) and Erks went into half time up by five (36 - 31).
The Erks coach not amused by the first half action put a zone into play in the 3rd and Erks produced there most effective quarter of the game by pouring in 23 points and keeping there opponents to just 10 points.
Forest employed a box and 1 in a hope to cancel the shooting of Irfan Hussain. Erks then went inside to Jon Amoasi and Wes Fortt for some success as well as freeing Irfan for his trade mark 3 pointers and drives.
Going into the 4th with an 18 point lead, the Erks coach again mixed the young guns in the line up in a hope to get them more actual game experience. Forest seized the opportunity given to them to put on a 10 point run.
Forest now feeling that they could pull of an upset pressed harder on defense and forced turnovers from the Erks guards and front line as they scored a total of 25 points to the Erks 9 in the 4th.
Inevitably, after a great performance from Forest, they tied the game at 66 - 66 with 2 minutes left. Coach re-instated his starting line up, and went for the win.
Erks called on what experience they had to hold for the last shot. With probably the best ball movement they had on the night, Erks managed to get Wes Fortt an open shot for the game clinching two.
Erks then pressured Forest in there half as time expired and secured the win.
Erks 1 scorers: Irfan Hussain 29, Jon Amoasi 25, Wes Fortt 8, Robin French 2, Michael Bamidale 2, Terry Reeve, Andrew French, Quentin Quaatey, Toby Kallar and Dela Agbolegbe.
