Erks improved to 3-1 with a comfortable win over the Tigers in a game that
saw the seasonal debut of 2 Erks veterans. Pensioner Terry Harris, an Erks
member for the past half century enjoyed a second half run out and 40
something former NBL coach Gary Glennard made his first foray onto a
basketball court in more than a year after wrist surgery. Gary eased his way
back into to action, looking rusty at the offensive end, protecting his arm
by showing a reluctance to go to the hoop. However he sparked the team
defensively and made his presence felt by complimenting ex BBL referee Rick
Hinds on his jacket, trousers and bicycle clips before Hinds had even
reached half court, a factor which may have contributed to the Tigers being
called for only 6 fouls in the entire game.
Once again in Eastbury's tiny gym, Lee Atkinson put on a shooting clinic on
his way to 28 points, narrowly eclipsing the Tigers star man Phil Dean whose
25 point haul was approximately 15 below his usual score against the Erks, a
reduction that can be attributed to the absence of Irfan Hussain's "defence"
on him. Dela Agbolegbe, who only popped in to play the 1st quarter before
heading off to NBL training, supported with 13 points, 7 of them coming in
the first 3 minutes of the second half as an increasingly desperate Dela
took the ball strong to the rack in an attempt to exceed Chims total. Chims
and John Sargent also scored in double figures, most coming during a run and
gun first half which the Erks took 50-43.
The game was effectively ended in the 3rd quarter, when the Erks produced
the only quarter of defence from either side in the whole game. Tenacious D
on the perimeter from Dela, Gary and Broms was backed up by Chims on the
boards and John "mad dog" Sargent, who managed to foul out. With the Erks 19
up going into the final period Coach Bromfield gave his players the green
light and although Gary Glennard's succession of pull up jump shots removed
most of the paint from the front of the Eastbury rim, the award for most ill
advised shot of the game went to Chims, after an Ed Baileyesque hook shot
that was both 3 feet wide and 2 feet short. Junior Alan Parker enjoyed
himself at the death hitting 3 successive J's, 1 of which actually swished
pleasantly through the net, as opposed to his usual technique of rattling
the flattest shot in the world off the back of the ring.
ERKS SCORERS:
Atkinson 28, Agbolegbe 13, Sargent 12, Williams 10, Parker 10, Bromfield 7,
