Barking & Dagenham Erkenwald Basketball Club

Match Report EL - Wednesday 10th November 2004
Brentwood Mavericks 72
Erkenwald 77

Despite the average age of the first five being 39+ years old, the Erks started brightly with Dave "Garbage" Churches putting the first nine points on the board for the Erks. This run ended abruptly after he picked up a second foul and was replaced by Jon Lee.

Just when the physical defence of the Mavericks started to tire the elderly Erks, the younger Erks were introduced into the game. This injection of youth kept the game close, and, while the Maverick defenders tried to decide which of the Eastenders FOWLER family he most resembled, Mark Denchfield hit four successive three pointers. Erks trailed 31-33 at half time.

The third period saw some fast break points and a couple of threes from Denchfield/Fowler that helped the Erks ease into a low scoring 53-44 lead at the end of the period. The low score reflecting both teams' strong defences.

With three quarters of the game gone, Mavericks finally managed to put a run together and actually pulled level with 3 minutes remaining in the game. This was the time for Erks' experienced players to re-enter the game and gain control again - unfortunately this was good in theory but in practice didn't happen as the Mavericks managed to hit some circus shots.

Dave "Garbage" Churches did hit a couple more threes to give the visitors the crucial lead that forced the home team to foul to regain possession; Steve Herd, John Powell, and Jon Bose then cooly converted their free throws to seal the win for the Erks.

Special mention should also go to Jon Lee who ended the match with an 8 point haul - doubling his career average!

Erks travel to Met Police on Sunday for their second Founder's Cup game. It's hoped that Erks' sharp shooting 3 point specialist can continue his current form.......as long as he gets somebody to mind his fruit + veg stall!

Erks scorers:
Denchfield-fowler 20, Churches 19, Overare 12, Lee (career high) 8, Powell 6, Bose 4, Herd 2, Broms 2, Atkinson 2, Smith.
