Barking & Dagenham Erkenwald Basketball Club

Match Report MEBL - Thursday 14th October 2004
Scorpions 54
Erkenwald 65

Erks started slowly in their game against Scorpions and it took a trademarked David Bromfield left handed drive to the hoop to register the first points of the new campaign. Gareth Simms and Steve Herd, both recovering from illness, then stepped up with some tough "D" and also earned some offensive success that kept the score ticking over for the visitors.

The game was changed in Erks' favour with the introduction of John Powell late in the first quarter. The veteran forward contributed immediately scoring 15 of his 21 points in the first half. With Jon Lee dominating the defensive glass and Mark Denchfield scoring a trey after his nightmare journey from east London, the Erks went into the interval leading 36-25.

Erks stayed in front throughout the second half. While centre Dave Churches struggled to find his scoring touch, Erks' Herd and Powell became the "go to" guys. JP in particular having his best game for a number of years getting numerous blocks and assists and showing his younger team-mates that he still can play despite his expanding waistband and lacklustre displays in training sessions.

Erks' MEBL campaign continues on Thursday 28th when they host Southend Saints at Sydney Russell.

Erks scorers:
Powell 21, Herd 10, Churches 9, Bromfield 8, Denchfield 5, Simms 4, Bose 4, Atkinson 2, Smith 2, Lee 0.
