Erks recorded an important win over title contenders Hainault to keep in contention with the league leaders. However, the game was there to be won by either team until Erks went on a 10 - 0 run in the final 5 minutes to wrap up the victory.
Erks raced out to an early 8 - 0 lead and then a 19 - 5 lead as man of the match Steve Herd, and Mark Denchfield found their range. Ex Erk (and club debtor to the tune of £80) Keith "Scarlet Pimpernel" Pringle then joined the visitors and made a difference as Hainault pulled to within 8 in the second quarter. Martin Overare and John Powell then started to add the points in the paint as Erks went into a 38 - 26 half time lead.
Graham Hill and Scarlet stepped up for the visitors in the 3rd quarter hitting 10 and 8 points respectively to take a 53 - 51 lead but responses from Steve Herd, John Powell and 40 minute point guard Dela Agbolegbe meant Erks went into the 4th quarter leading 57 - 53.
JP and Herdy continued to score for the Erks and a purple spell from Hainult guard Wayne Alp drew the scores level at 67 each with 5 minutes to play. Herdy, Dela and Martin then combined for 10 points and good defence (particularly from JP who held Graham Hill scoreless in the 4th quarter) meant Erks ran out to a 10 point lead and then held on for the win with some free throws.
Declan McCusker 3; Mark Denchfield 14; Lee Atkinson 4; Martin Overare 20; Steve Herd 24; Dela Agbolegbe 6; Ed Bailey 4 (a tough 4 - and Ed was particularly tough from the bench in the 4th quarter); John Powell 7.
