Barking & Dagenham Erkenwald Basketball Club

Match Report EMBL - Thursday 24th February 2005
Erkenwald 113
Eastbury Tigers 42

(35 - 4) (62 - 17) (81 - 35)

Erks eased to a comfortable win over local rivals Galleon to cement top place in the EMBL league with some crucial games to play in the forthcoming weeks. Mark Denchfield did the early damage with 16 first quarter points on his way to a game high 27 points.

A brief rally by sluggy (who no longer has a slug), GI Joe & "Give us a cup of tea" Ernie Wise in the third quarter saw the visitors briefly cut the gap at one point to 47 points but Garbage Time Declan stepped up with 14 fourth quarter points to close the game out.

Galleon (aka Eastbury Tigers) have not beaten the Erks for over 7 years. They almost beat the Erks on two occasions at the smallest gym in the world in recent years; once two years ago when Church was playing and another occasion when Erks were in the NBL with Dela & Gary playing.

However, the last victory by Galleon over the Erks was when Galleon were a one man team with Mark Little averaging around 45 points per game. An Erks team including Chims, Broms & Lee Atkinson arrived back at Woodside many years ago explaining they had lost to Galleon. In disbelief, Gary & Declan asked how many points Mark Little had scored (assuming he must have scored about 70) to find out he wasn't even playing!!!! Chims explained that GI Joe & sluggy had a stormer.

It wasn't a steller night for Erks since this was the same game that saw Erks guard Tim Henry throw his shorts(!) at Broms before storming out of the gym with a couple of minutes remaining on the clock. Contact Chims for further history.

Erks scorers:
Declan McCusker 26, Mark Denchfield 27, Broms 2, Martin Overare 24, Gareth Sims 8, Lee Atkinson 16, Dela 4, Matt Smith 6.
