Barking & Dagenham Erkenwald Basketball Club

Match Report Game 15 - Saturday 29th March 2003
Camden Knights 55 Erks 61

Erkenwald consolidated their 3rd place in the London Met Premier League with a hard fought win over the reigning champions and current league leaders. With Camden's only defeat so far this season being the reverse fixture against the Erks at Sydney Russell, the Knights, a team consisting of 9 Yugoslavians and an Australian, were fired up to avenge that loss and with the University of London breathing down their neck at the top of the table, they started positively against a 6 man Erks squad.

Aggressive driving to the basket from Jantjic and Sladojevic gave the Knights a 20-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, but after allowing 20 points in the first quarter, the Erks defence tightened up dramatically as Coach Declan McCusker's game plan was implemented to the letter. Erks forced the Knights to take outside shots and as the misses mounted up, Erks big men Dave Churches and Richard Williams cleared up the rebounds. With only 6 men at his disposal, McCusker also wanted a low scoring, slow tempo game and point guard Dela Agbolegbe obliged, repeatedly walking the ball up the court before setting up the offence.

Although Camden have probably the deepest squad in the league, they didn't have anybody capable of defending the 6'9 Dave Churches, who the Erks pounded the ball into at every opportunity. With the Erks withdrawing from the National League at the start of the season, Churches has been playing for Ware Rebels in the 2nd tier of British basketball and with impressive fitness, at the age of 34 is playing the best basketball of his career. Churches proved to be unstoppable against the Knights, dominating the scoring with 32 points using a variety of inside moves to exploit his size and 3 point shots to draw the defense away from the basket. His guards also stepped up in support when 2 and 3 defenders swarmed around Churches, Mark Denchfield hitting 8 points from outside, Italian student Dave Pasacantilli driving to the hoop for his 8 points and Dela Agbolegbe's speed allowing him to score 9 of his 11 points from the free-throw line.

The Erks disciplined approach was illustrated by the fact that the other 2 players, McCusker and Williams only attempted 1 shot between them as they concentrated on defensive duties! With the Erks defence remaining committed to the end, 61 points proved to be enough, Camden being forced to chase around the court, trying in vain to foul as the Erks ran down the clock to seal the win.

Erks scorers:
Churches 32, Agbolegbe 11, Denchfield 8, Pasacantilli 8, McCusker 2, Williams.

Erkenwald's two teams in the Essex Met league are both in line to make the end of season play-offs, Ed Bailey's younger "A" team look likely to finish 4th, whilst McCusker's older "B" team need to win one of their final 2 games, both against reigning champions Hainault, to claim a first league championship in 5 years.

The Erks are also still going strong in the London Met Plate competition, although the Club's first team departed the National Founders Cup at the last 16 stage, a trip to Liverpool yielding a 74-61 defeat.
